How To Fail In Social Media

Saturday, September 10th, 2011

All Facebook has a blog post titled “5 Ways To Fail At Facebook.” It’s a great article except that the five ways shared can apply to any social media – Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, you name it.

Here they are in a recap:

  1. Fail to understand your audience
  2. Fail to use your imagination
  3. Fail to track your marketing efforts
  4. Fail to build relationships
  5. Fail to hire social media experts

You might think that you can do social media yourself, but that could be a fatal mistake. Many a company has risen from the social media pile with egg on their face because of some silly mishap that could have been prevented. There are a number of reasons why you might want to hire a professional social media team to handle your campaigns.

First on the list is the time-intensive nature of social media marketing. You have other things to do – like run your business. You don’t really have time for social media, and you know it.

Another reason to hire a professional firm for your social media campaigns is because they are the experts. A social media firm does it every day. They understand the nuances between the different networks, their capabilities, and their limitations. They can steer you toward strategies that work for each social network and keep you away from strategies that have been tried – and failed.

Don’t make the mistake of trying to navigate social media on your own. You wouldn’t assume you can captain a ship at high seas, would you?

Original Content Will Love You

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

Original content is king online. All content wants to be original. If you make your website content original content then it will love you forever.

There are two sides to original content – the easy side and the hard side.

The easy side is to just write. If you don’t pay attention to what anyone else is doing and just write your pages then it is highly likely that your content will be original. Easy, right?

Wrong.

The hard part is getting your site ranked and converting traffic. It isn’t enough to have original content. That’s easy. The hard part is getting your site ranked with easy content and converting your traffic to sales. But if you can do that and overcome the hurdles along the way then you’ll succeed online.

5 Reasons Small Businesses Fail Online

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

SiteProNews has an article about why Internet marketers fail online. Great article except that it’s mostly talking about Internet marketers who build landing pages, microsites, and other animals for AdSense or use other “traditional” Internet marketing strategies. Small businesses using online marketing techniques do things a little differently.

That’s why I decided to come up with my own list of 5 reasons small businesses fail when they go online to market their businesses. But for the sake of comparison, here’s the summary of why Internet marketers aren’t succeeding:

  1. They are overwhelmed with information
  2. Lack key marketing basics
  3. Not much time or few resources
  4. Don’t have the necessary skills
  5. They lack persistence

But do these same afflictions affect small business owners online? Aside from key marketing basics, I’d say small business owners suffer from some of the same problems, but they aren’t necessarily causes of failure online. If so then they’d be causes of failure off line and if small businesses are failing off line they likely aren’t trying to build online variations of their businesses. Or shouldn’t be.

So how are small business owners marketing online different than Internet marketers? Here is the list of top 5 reasons I can think of:

  1. No persistence – OK, let’s get this one of out of the way right now. In this regard, small business owners are like other Internet marketers. They give up too soon. The old adage “you can’t win if you quit” rings true. Stay in there! Be persistent.
  2. Hung up on their budget – Small business owners have small budgets. The beauty of marketing online is that you don’t need a big budget, but many small business owners fail online because they’re hung up on their pocketbooks and cede to those with more money to throw. Be stealthy. You don’t have to be Bill Gates or Donald Trump.
  3. Try to bite off more than they can chew – Rome wasn’t built in a day. Neither was your business. And your online business won’t be either. Take your time, learn the ropes, and don’t quit.
  4. Analysis paralysis – You can analyze information all day long and get nowhere. Eventually, you’ve got to do something. Don’t let thinking get in the way of doing. You’re successful off line because you take action. Now, take action online.
  5. They listen to Internet marketers – Just because someone calls himself an Internet marketer doesn’t mean he knows what he’s doing. There are a lot of strategies online to use. Some of them work, some of them don’t. But if you listen to the Internet marketers you could lose. Many of them fail because they’re trying all the wrong things any way. Instead, choose your guides carefully.

It’s not all about the money. And it’s not all about time. It’s about how effective you use both time and money (the little you do have) to reach the audience you want to reach. The most important thing is this: Be persistent!

Characteristics Of A Successful Blogger

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Darren Rowse of Problogger fame had a great post the other day on the 12 traits of successful bloggers. I won’t steal all of his thunder, but I’d just like to mention the 12 traits and offer a few comments on them.

  • Creative and Playful – You’ve got to have fun with what you’re doing. If it isn’t fun then you probably shouldn’t be doing it.
  • Innovative – Darren makes a good point in that this isn’t necessarily about technology. It’s about leadership. Innovators are people who lead the pack in thinking in directions no one has thought before.
  • Connectors – As in social butterflies.
  • Community Enablers – This one is difficult to master, but there are some new tools coming out now that will make this much more accessible to the average blogger and people just eat the community stuff right up!
  • Information Mavens – Soak in as much as you can.
  • Communicators – It is a communication medium after all! But I love his last point:

Successful bloggers have the ability to trigger some sort of response in their reader.

  • Interest – If you are interested in the topic that you are writing about, you’ll be a much better blogger. It starts with passion.
  • Entrepreneurs – Successful bloggers are self starters. If you can’t motivate yourself you can’t motivate anyone else.
  • Originality – Dare to be different.
  • Perseverance – Success doesn’t happen overnight. You’ve got to keep plugging away at it. Follow your dreams and they’ll reward you.
  • Focus – Don’t get distracted. It’s so easy to do.
  • Curiosity – If you aren’t curious about new ideas within your niche then blogging isn’t for you. It is very important to stay up with the latest advances and to ask the “what if” questions. If they’re not going where you want to go, take them there.

This is a great list of character traits that anyone who wants to succeed in blogging should develop. Without them, you’re just another voice in the wilderness.
