Facebook wants to woo small business owners into becoming advertisers. How are they going to do that? By giving away $10 million in free advertising. They’re planning to do this $50 at a time starting next year.
So why is Facebook giving away all that money in free advertising? Here’s a test. It’s multiple choice. Can you guess which answer is correct?
- Small business owners don’t think they need Facebook
- They want to steal you away from Google AdWords
- Facebook wants to encourage small business owners to advertising using Facebook Marketing Solutions
- They think if they give you $50 in free advertising that you’ll stick around and spend more money
If you said “all of the above,” then you’d be correct. Facebook is getting aggressive about pursuing small business owners as advertisers.
It’s true, 64% of small business owners think social networking isn’t necessary. Therefore, they aren’t on Facebook at all.
Since Google AdWords has pretty much dominated Web advertising for almost a decade, Facebook is looking to get a piece of that action, and more than any other company they are poised to take a big bite out of Google’s chunk of the market. I think Google is just a little bit concerned too.
So if Facebook can convince you to at least give Facebook Marketing Solutions a try, then maybe – just MAYBE – you’ll do well enough to keep advertising. They’ll make more money, you’ll get more business, and Facebook can topple Google from king of the Internet mountain.
At least it’s worth a shot in Facebook’s eyes. Can you blame them?

Google has said publicly that it fears Facebook. As well it should. The social network is now the most trafficked website online. But there is another reason to fear Facebook too. It has a competing advertising model.
For the longest time, serious advertisers online went to the pay-per-click line, and Google was the beginning of that line. The alternatives were Yahoo!, Bing (or Windows Live), and smaller PPC search engines. But then Facebook became the popular social network and introduced its own PPC advertising model. In the last couple of years, Facebook has improved its advertising offerings and is now in a respectable position.
The latest test run by Facebook is for real-time advertising. Will it win out?
Imagine posting to your Facebook wall, “I’m going out tonight and wearing my red high heels.” At that moment, an ad appears advertising shoes. Would it creep you out? Would you click the link?
The verdict is not out on whether Facebook users would tolerate real-time advertising. My bet is that they would. There may be a few complaints, but most people would just go along with it. So I think this represents a great opportunity for advertisers. If you want to promote your business through PPC, Google is no longer your only option. It may not even be your best option.

Dennis Yu has some good ideas on using Facebook for advertising. Specifically, some of the things that I like about his approach include:
- If you’re a small business then you can use these strategies to move in on your larger competitors
- Advertising on Facebook using these methods is direct targeting in ways that you can’t do off line
- It’s easy to sneak up on your competition
- You can give the impression that you are bigger than you are just by advertising
- I particularly like the “Switcher Campaign” model
Facebook has been criticized for not being as effective as PPC, but I think we may be seeing some evidence of change in how Facebook rolls out its advertising. If they can prove that Facebook advertising is as effective as PPC advertising with Google AdWords then we might see some legitimate competition in the online advertising space. At any rate, Facebook advertising looks like it could be worth a look-see.

I generally don’t recommend that small business owners put advertising on their websites. If you place Google AdSense all over your business blog or website then you are offering exit holes for your visitors to leave through. That’s generally not a good idea. Even if you make a little money on those leaving your site, wouldn’t you rather have them as a customer for life?
But let’s say that your online business model involves advertising in some manner. Would you rather use Google AdSense or Facebook socially intelligent ads?
If you’re wondering what’s the difference then consider this. Google AdSense is a keyword-based system. Google matches ads to the content on your website. But Facebook, being a social network, has much more important information about its users. They can keep tabs on your interests and show you ads related to those interests. Such a system might actually prove to be more valuable to advertisers than a keyword-based system.
So now that you know the difference, if you were to provide advertising on your website, would you choose to use Google AdSense ads or Facebook social ads?

More companies are spending more money on online advertising than print.
The big question here is, Why? And should you be spending more money for online advertising as well?
Keep in mind that by “online advertising” I mean more than just display advertising. I mean all forms of digital marketing. That includes search engine optimization, social media marketing, pay per click, etc. Again, why?
I think that companies that are migrating their marketing efforts to online forms of marketing are doing so in response to the trend in consumer trust in online sources. More people are conducting searches online for everything from real estate to churches. As more people conduct searches and find themselves interacting with others online (Facebook is now the second most trafficked site online) then advertisers will follow. But should you?
I think small businesses would benefit by having an online presence and by advertising online. You can get more return on less investment by advertising online. You might as well go where your audience is. Don’t you think?

Deloitte conducted a survey that shows people are more influenced to buy a product by online consumer reviews of the product rather than direct advertising. That’s not really news, but it does indicate that consumer review sites are pretty valuable. If you can manage to have a few of your satisfied customers go to a site like, say, Yelp and review your business and its products or services then that would go much further than you spending money on display advertising online.
The survey also indicates that people are socializing more online, watching more TV than they did last year, and really want to connect their TV to the Internet. So what does that say?
I think it says that TV isn’t going anywhere. In fact, people are more influenced by TV advertising than they are Internet advertising. And if people are spending time socializing online then you can bet they are talking to their friends. So if you can find a way to get your influence into the social media circles that your potential customers are running in, that would be quite influential. What do you think?

(Source) The Bottom Line? Internet advertsising is probably the single most cost effective means of advertising available today and companies continue to up their budgets to capitalize.
I think this is an amazing announcement. With fuel prices climbing ever higher and more people losing jobs (and businesses), for anyone to say that advertising expenses are rising is incredible. I think it means that consumers are growing more confident of the Internet – at least, business consumers are. With the increase in online advertising, I think retail consumers will follow with more confidence of online purchasing, which means two things for businesses that operate online:
- More advertising should pay off
- Offering purchasing opportunities online will pay off
In both of these cases, businesses that advertise online should win. But you do have a budget to think about. Have you started allocating a part of your monthly budget to online advertising? If not, you should think about it.
How can you make Internet marketing pay?

Local internet marketing is the ideal way to get ahead of your competition and grab the customers you need to grow your business. No matter what your business, you can find customers online. However, the internet spans the globe, so you could end up facing a lot of competition unless you narrow things down.
By going with local internet marketing, you aren´t publicizing your business to the entire world, but just your area. This can be a very effective way to market. While your focus is narrower, you are also getting rid of most of the competition. In some areas, you may be the only business of your kind to advertise online, putting you far ahead of the game.
Even if you have a worldwide marketing campaign online, you can still localize. The beauty of the internet is that you can easily run more than one marketing campaign and still spend less than you would if you were advertising in print. This is a huge benefit of local internet marketing.
Another advantage to being one of the first in your area to use local internet marketing is that even when your competition comes online, you´ll still be ahead of them. Your website will have been up longer and it will take a lot of work to overtake you. If you haven´t started a local internet marketing campaign yet, it´s definitely time to think about doing so.
