Way back (in the '90's), I seem to remember the NY Times tried to make some of it's content available only to subscribers. That did not work out. But I think that times have changed and that there is a new acceptability of paid content online.

I sincerely hope, as a native New Yorker, that the Times makes this work. I really can't imagine a world without them as a news source.

You are right about content. Content that is used to help a product or service sale needs to be free in order to attract prospects. That information is used to help them make a buying decision. Content that is the end in itself (i.e. news) does not need to be free.

Having said that, I would expect that if I were paying for content (let's say at the Times website) then I would expect that the advertising would be minimal and non-invasive.

Just my thoughts on this.
